How do I check the performance of my energiser?
You can use a fence tester to measure the output voltage (open circuit voltage) of your energiser. Make sure that neither the fence nor earthing posts are connected to the energiser when taking readings. Turn on your energiser and hold the metal rod of the tester against the earth connection and the tip of the testing device against the fence connection. The output voltage displayed serves only to tell you that the energiser is fully functional; it will not necessarily be the same as the voltage when the fence is connected.
How do I measure the voltage on the fence?
The voltage on the fence is simple to determine using a testing device. Turn on your energiser and insert the metal rod of the tester into the ground and hold the tip of the testing device against the fence wire. Depending on which tester you have, the voltage will be displayed by either a blinking indicator light or a digital display. This way you can easily find out the condition of your fence. Ensure that you don't have a reading below a minimum voltage of 2000 V (3000 V is better).
modern digital fence testers are just as useful to help locate faults, and do not merely display the voltage.
It is generally helpful to find several points along the fence and test the fence voltage at these same points regularly. These values can then be easily compared with each other to simplify any necessary fault location.
