Adviser: Electric fence signs (warning sign: “Attention electric fence")
Electric fences have many advantages. They are considered to be the only type of fence that is truly insurmountable. It’s impossible to jump over, dig under or escape through an electric fence, and they are also difficult to damage – this applies both to tall fences out in the fields and to small fences in the garden. The combination of a mechanical and an electric barrier is responsible for achieving the high level of safety. And it’s precisely because electricity is used that warning signs should be mounted. Similarly to fence accessories, signs for electric fences can also be purchased online.
Labelling requirements on electric fences
Electric fences are subject to labelling requirements according to the German electrotechnology association (VDE). There is a good reason for this: On an electric fence, the energiser is responsible for supplying the fence system with electricity. This is transmitted through the conducting material by the energiser (battery operated or with mains connection). The conducting material takes the form of polywire, wire, rope or tape. If it touches the fence, an animal will come into contact with this component which will give it an electric shock. The animal senses the electric shock and moves away which means that the fencing is respected, both inside and out. However, what happens if an unsuspecting walker approaches the fence to stroke or feed horses, or if a child touches the fence? This can be avoided by mounting electric fence warning signs. A warning sign is likely to be insufficient if you have a large fence or pasture, whereas it would be adequate – for instance, mounted on a gate – if you have electric pet fencing / an invisible garden fence. Sets containing five warning signs are suitable for long fences and can be mounted in well-visible positions in strategically selected locations. We recommend a distance of approx. 100 m between each sign.

According to regulations, electric fence warning signs must always be yellow with black writing and must feature a lightning sign in a triangle – i.e. the symbol associated with electricity. The text on electric fence warning signs varies. You may opt for one of the following formulations, among others:
- Warning: electric fence!
- Do not feed the animals!
- Do not enter!
It could also be possible, for example to set up a sign with the words “Horses in transit” if you are travelling with horses and set up an electric fence en route. The plastic signs are available in standard sizes. They feature holes for attaching them to the fence.
