When considering electric fences, don’t forget about grounding. Grounding posts and lead out cables for the electric fence can be purchased for this purpose. Lead out cables are particularly protected against high voltages of up to several thousand volts that flow through them. A normal cable which can be purchased from a DIY store would break after a short while and render the entire electric fence unusable.

Grounding for electric fences

Electricity flows through the electric fence conducting material, ensuring that the animals cannot get through the fence system. This electrical energy is transmitted by the energiser. The energiser must be particularly powerful if you have animals with thick / dense / long fur, a long fence or difficult terrain with thick vegetation. The more powerful the energiser, the more important it is to ensure correct grounding with the grounding post. The role of grounding posts on electric fences is to feed the electric energy that flows through the animal into the ground and back into the energiser, therefore closing the circuit. Grounding stakes are connected to the fence via connectors which are generally supplied in the scope of delivery but which can also be purchased separately at a later stage. The lead out cable must be coordinated with the grounding post. The number of grounding posts to use also depends on factors such as the ground, the energiser and the weight of the fence. For each grounding rod, one lead out cable is required.

The grounding post connector is generally several metres long, for example, 3 m. It is used to connect several grounding posts or the fence connector. The fence supply cable connects the energiser to the electric fence or grounding stake. The ground connection cableprevents electricity from being lost, which means that it must comply with strict requirements. It is insulated and designed to resist several thousand volts, UV rays and damp conditions over long periods of time. Copper stranded wire or a bundled copper core runs through the lead out cable which may, for example, run from the energiser inside a building to the fence system out in the open. Depending on the model, the cable can be laid above ground or under the ground. Eyelets are used to connect the cable. Conductive, flexible lead out cables can be ordered in various lengths. For example, 10-m, 25-m, 50-m or even 100 m-long high voltage lead out cables with a copper conductor or hot-dip galvanised steel core are available. Thus, fence cables and lead out cables can handle high voltages and long lengths without any problem while, at the same time, being doubly insulated. Waterproof connectors are used for connecting supply cables.
